Welcome

Diafrikan is a combination of Diaspora and Afrikan.

Hello! Nkulamusizza! Mambo! Salut! Diafrikan is my way of reclaiming my education and learning more about the motherland and my home. With 55 countries, over 1,000 languages, and some of the best people you’ll ever meet, Africa is my motherland, and Uganda is my home. As a diasporan trying to stay connected to my roots, Diafrikan is a platform where my curiosity and the stories I never learnt while growing up will flourish. I hope you find solace in the articles, too.

My Story

I was born in Uganda and moved to Switzerland in 2009. From 2009 to 2019, I spent my history, economics, international relations, and geography classes learning so much about Western civilisations, culture, and history, with the same narrative of African History, which involved stories of stereotypes about insufficiency, incapability, and barbarism. It wasn’t until I reached University that I felt allowed to learn about the continent, where courses, though limited, were dedicated to using source materials written by African scholars, where classes were devoted to understanding the beauty in our resilience and capabilities to run our own countries and be our solutions.

It was in 2020 when I learnt about decolonising one’s learning, and I’ve never looked back. Being born Ugandan but not having lived there my whole life means I’ve missed out on understanding my country’s foundation; even though I have a passport and a connection, I am an African in the diaspora trying every day to stay connected to her roots. I want to continue learning more about my country, my home, and the motherland in general, and I want to use this platform to share what I’ve learnt because, in a world so interconnected and globalised, I’m taking my education into my own hands choosing to reconnect with my home and my continent.
